June 30, 2014
Dear New York Employer:
I write to you today to ask you to join my office Thursday, September 25th at the LGBT Center located at 208 West 13th Street in Manhattan, to meet young men and women, age 16 to 24 who are motivated, eager to learn, and ready to start working for you today.
When Governor Andrew M. Cuomo came into office in 2011, it was clear that our approach to meeting the workforce demands of our State's business community had to change. As a State we have to focus on what business' needs are and direct training dollars to meet those needs. In 2012, the Governor's office launched the New York Youth Works program: an initiative designed to provide opportunities to our newest and most at-risk members of the workforce. By providing training prior to an interview and a tax credit for each youth's first year on the job, we put more than 12,800 of unemployed young men and women to work at New York businesses. These businesses now have capable employees, tailored to their needs, and did not have to spend a dime to recruit and train them.
While the LGBT youth participants will be there starting at 11:00am, we ask that you arrive between 9:30am and 10:30am to set up. Business Service Representatives will be there to help you find the talent you seek and any incentives for which you may be eligible.
There's nothing more important than building our business community and training our workforce to carry New York into the next generation and beyond. I hope you will participate in our Youth Employment Day on Thursday, September 25th and help connect our young people with the skills and opportunities they want and will need in their future.
Participation in the job fair is free. RSVP as soon as possible via email to Scott Melvin or call 718.613.3971.
Thank you in advance for your time and commitment to New York's future
Peter Rivera, Commissioner
