Image
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and NGLCCNY are excited to welcome Derrick M. Brown as Executive Director for NGLCCNY. Brown will begin his role as NGLCCNY’s first full-time Executive Director on April 15, 2013.  "We are thrilled to have Derrick on board to build on a strong foundation and to ensure that LGBT and allied business members and corporate partners receive the first-class customer service and growth opportunities they have come to expect from NGLCC nationally,"  said Justin Nelson, NGLCC Co-Founder and President. Brown is no stranger to the LGBT chamber movement or LGBT supplier diversity certification, having served on the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for seven years, including three years as Chairman. Before relocating to New York with his husband last year, Brown served as the Executive Director of the Kraddick Foundation in Dallas, TX, where he was responsible for a $3.8 million budget and oversaw all asp

The Power of NGLCCNY Membership

Image
This month, we thought it would be beneficial to focus on the strong benefits of developing relationships with other Chamber members.  While we continue to encourage all Chamber members to learn more about and develop relationships with the Chamber’s Corporate Partners, there are great opportunities available to each of you by developing relationships with one another.  After all, NGLCCNY is a chamber, meaning it is a forum for its members to form and build strong business relationships.   For example, long-time Silver Business Member Neil Cerbone Associates (NCA) and Platinum Business Member L7z Group , since meeting through NGLCCNY, have formed a partnership that expands their respective product and service offerings and increases overall capacity of both firms – the interlocking directorate.  NCA’s President, Neil Cerbone, and CEO, Thomas Devaney, together with L7z founders and principals, Jeremy Bellman and Gonzalo ‘Gonzo’ Araya, explain

10 Questions with Thomas Koveleskie

What was the possibility you saw for the Chamber?  I wanted to bring together thoughtful, successful and passionate business professionals who were interested in building lifetime connections among themselves with a spirit of self-improvement, contribution and generosity. I wanted to create an environment where I myself would feel comfortable in building business relationships and friendships. It was about bringing together my personal passion for the LGBT community and my desire to see friends succeed. The Chamber’s Industry Council programs are your brainchild. Under your leadership we’ve launched the Legal, Financial Services, Social Impact and Media & Entertainment IC’s. What was your vision for these counc

What I Learned at NGLCCNY

Image
As the days of my tenure wind down, I can’t help but reflect on the lessons learned over these past five years. When I agreed to take on the Membership Director role in March 2008, there was no way I could foresee the Chamber would grow so fast. So quickly, in fact, that it was necessary to create a more formal structure for the leadership of the Chamber to ensure its continued development on an upward trajectory. Thus my position as President of NGLCCNY was born. The experience of creating this organization has taught me many lessons and has provided ongoing opportunities to fail, succeed and grow. Here are some of the biggest lessons learned. People Want Community – The very first M3: Members’ Monthly Mixer took place in May 2008 and 36 people attended, including a guest appearance by George Takei. That evening we unwittingly laid the foundation for what would become our flagship event. M3 was conceived as different from all the other networking options out there because it wa

New Certified Supplier Roundtable Meets Success

The meeting was opened by David Ricciardi, Chair of the Supplier Diversity Committee for NGLCCNY and facilitated by D Scott Pierce of Odyssey Leadership. The meeting agenda was framed around the key question, “What would help you gain better value from being an NGLCC Certified Supplier? This first session yielded several significant ideas and topics of interest including: • Getting an instructional overview of how to best leverage the NGLCC Corporate Partner & Certified Supplier database. • Establishing an “NGLCC Corporate Introduction” process to help certified suppliers effectively connect to the right people within Corporate Partner organizations. • M
