For the second year in a row, NGLCCNY will be honoring  a Non-Profit Community Partner  with its Social Enterprise Award. American Cancer Society to Launch Major New Prevention Study

Image
Just in time for Valentine’s Day , there’s someone who wants a long-term commitment from you: at least 20 years. The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers to help with long-term cancer research. This is the third long-term nationwide study the American Cancer Society has done. The first started in the 1950s. The second began in the '80s and is still going on. American Cancer Society epidemiologist Alpa Patel says those studies led to more than 500 significant discoveries. “Our first cancer prevention study actually unlocked the link between smoking and lung cancer,” said Dr. Patel. “And so that’s the type of finding that we hope to continue to uncover.” Researchers want to dig deeper this time. In addition to a baseline health and family history questionnaire, researchers will ask for a blood sample and will measure your waist circumference. And then, for the next 20 or 30 years, you’ll get a health survey to complete a few times a year. Dr. Patel points to

10 Questions with Mercedes Cano, Esquire

by Richard Oceguera Subject: Mercedes Cano, Esq. Name of Business: Law Offices of Mercedes Cano      Helping People Since: 2000 Number of Employees: 5 Location: 40-26 82nd Street, Jackson Heights, Queens 11373 Web: www.MercedesCano.com How old were you when you first came to the United States? I was 16 and I came from Colombia. Out of all of the cities in the world, why did you pick NYC? I think immigrants usually pick a place where there is someone who can receive you. I had an aunt here so it made sense at the time. The reason why I decided to stay here is more important than why I came. I came to escape the oppressive “straight” culture of Colombia at that time. Going back to my country at that time would mean being forced to get married. That’s what women were raised for at that time. And it’s like that to a great extent still. I knew I had to stay here. Corporate Partner Spotlight: Diageo

Image
While many of us are well acquainted with Diageo for its world-famous drink brands (if you were at Shining Stars in October, you likely drank many of their brands), NGLCCNY is particularly proud to have Diageo as one of its newest Corporate Partners.  Diageo, which first became involved with the Chamber in July 2012, has already demonstrated its commitment to building strong relationships with NGLCCNY members, including by participating as a Stakeholder of the 2012 Shining Stars. Joe O’Brien, responsible for Diageo’s experiential field marketing and consumer promotions as part of procurement in North America, became familiar with the Chamber through counterparts at Pfizer while discussing strategies for obtaining diverse suppliers.   “Diageo is thrilled to become involved with the Chamber as it is working to further develop its supplier diversity program.  We were also particularly excited on the national level to become a part of NGLCC’s 10th anniversary gala,” says O’Brien
