LGBT Weddings in Mexico

Planners in Mexico Embrace LGBT Weddings by Bernadette Coveney Smith  In late June, I flew down to Mexico to teach wedding planners and other wedding industry professionals all about same-sex weddings.  I talked about the laws and policies, language and terminology, data, wedding trends, differences between gay and straight weddings, and marketing information. The first day, in Mexico City, there were about 80 people in the room, including event sponsors from United Airlines and JW Marriott Hotel.  The second day, in Cancun, there were around 30 people, mostly wedding planners and people who work at wedding venues. I spent a full day with each group and the enthusiasm around same-sex weddings is amazing.  These are people who truly want to do the right thing, believe in equality, and want to treat their same-sex couple clients with the respect that all couples deserve. While there, I also did some interviews with newspapers, tv and websites who are reporting on th

Unstoppable Community

Unstoppable Community by Jackson Simmonds @jacksonsimmonds On Wednesday, July 18th, the oasis-like Beekman Beer Garden and Beach Club at South Street Seaport hosted the Chamber’s M3: Members’ Monthly Mixer. Members and guests enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvre (think, crab cakes, coconut shrimp, spiced chicken tenders, and bruschetta) and sipped signature cocktails. The Beekman staff was friendly and accommodating, moving through the crowd during the course of evening with seemingly endless trays of treats. We definitely embraced the beach theme by turning out in brightly hued shorts, natty piqué polos shirts, tank tops, boat shoes and designer flip flops galore, despite (or because of) torrential rains and hail just prior to M3. Hope you didn’t miss this one because it will probably be next summer before you get to wear shorts to an M3 again! Beekman’s waterfront locale with breathtaking views of Brooklyn Bridge was the perfect backdrop for new members Joe Cote,

Bright New Partnership on Horizon On Wednesday, July 25, Chamber President Richard Oceguera and Chief of Staff Henry Jones held a phone conference with New York State government officials Yrthya Dinzey-Flores, Chief Diversity Officer, Alphonso David, Deputy Secretary for Civil Rights and a representative from the Empire State Business Development Corporation. The conference was an initial introduction between NGLCCNY and the State, and explored possible collaborations between the two. New York has a hundred million dollars in special funds and programs for new and established businesses. The resources, offered by Empire State Development, are available free of charge and support all aspects of business development, from creating a business plan and funding a startup, to navigating tax incentives, to expanding into international export activity. Mr. Oceguera proposed creating a business development workshop to verse NGLCCNY members in navigating the State’s vast array of sma
