Jim Akers of Pfizer

Advocate for Diverse Procurement Moves to New Post in China by Robert F. Finkelstein, Esq. NGLCCNY is proud and fortunate to include Pfizer as one of its corporate partners.  Since 2009, when it first became involved with NGLCCNY, Pfizer has demonstrated its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by providing unyielding support to NGLCCNY.  Among its contributions, Pfizer has sponsored NGLCCNY’s annual Shining Stars event since the event’s inception in 2010, hosted two M3’s, and, consistent with its own initiatives, has already assisted in introducing numerous NGLCC certified businesses to one another.  One of the key Pfizer individuals who has been instrumental in building NGLCCNY’s strong relationship with Pfizer is Jim Akers.  Notwithstanding his demanding work schedule and an imminent move to China, Jim was kind enough to devote some time for an interview for this article.  In November 2010, Jim took on the role of overseeing Pfizer’s global sourcing, inc

Please join me for this inspiring discussion with one of the nation's highest fundraising participants in the 2012 AIDS Walk, as well as the founder of Insignia National Title Agency, LLC. Damon L. Jacobs: I want to begin by thanking you.  I take part in the AIDS Walk every year, and noticed that you were the seventh highest individual participant in 2012. Why is this cause important to you? Craig de Thomas: My mother passed away from AIDS in 1991. It was very important for me to find a way to honor her memory, think about her, and remember her struggles. I remember the things I watched her endure on a daily basis when there was no

From Non-Profit to Social Impact

From Non-Profit to Social Impact:  Defining the Mission of the NGLCCNY Social Impact Industry Council by Eric Longo The social sector’s organizational framework and best practices are evolving increasingly quickly as industry leaders apply the strategic approaches and thinking associated with for-profit businesses. The social sector has adopted jargon once reserved almost exclusively for the corporate lexicon, and has emulated many for-profit paradigms, some with greater success than others. “Social entrepreneurs” are busy “innovating” with “high-value” service models, growing them to “scale,” “measuring ROI,” while many funders are experimenting with “impact investing.” Gone are the days where funders satisfied their philanthropic good deeds by merely cutting a “blank” check to an organization in hopes that change would happen. Funders now demand results. Using sophisticated metrics, non-profits are required to demonstrate impact and to show how effective they are at bring
