Member Spotlight: Barton Jackson

Coming from a family of bankers, you might be inclined to say that the financial services stars have aligned and continue to align for this California-born and Idaho-raised, TD Bank Small Business Specialist, Barton L. Jackson II.

“All three of my aunts worked in banking, and my mother and father actually met when they worked for Bank of Idaho and First Data, respectively,” said Jackson. His dad was part of the team that computerized the first credit cards and then went on to become a business consultant specializing in the computerization processes and internet-inventory solutions – his mom’s bank was the test pilot. How ironic is that?

In pursuit of more job opportunities and a more progressive LGBT community, Jackson, shortly after college, found himself in Seattle, WA with a friend of his. After 9-hours of driving from Boise, they were greeted by a wall of rain just 20 minutes outside of Seattle – they had arrived. Here Jackson began his career by working for Verity, the Pacific Northwest’s oldest credit union. In Seattle, Jackson not only kicked-off his career and found a community supporting his inclusion needs, he also met his fiancĂ©, Stanley Martin. The banking DNA is certainly there but I think the coincidence in finding love as his parents did, is there as well. Stanley Martin is a performer; they met while Jackson (in his free time) was writing and performing the spoken word at the Seattle Poetry Slam, Seattle’s longest running weekly show.

Today, now in the East coast and with over 10 years in banking, Jackson has two roles at TD Bank. Small Business Specialist - responsible to develop and manage relationships with the Upper West Side TD Bank footprint's small business clientele and ensure that products and services are aligned to their business needs. His second role is voluntary, as the Metro New York Community/Marketplace Lead for the LGBTA Business Resource Group. “It is my privilege to be engaged and present in the LGBTA community of NYC and TD's LGBTA workforce,” said Jackson. “My job is to connect the two for volunteer opportunities, professional development, networking, and business development,” he said.

Jackson also volunteers as an Ambassador for nglccNY under the direction of Phyllis Mehalakes, Ambassador Chair. In this role, he loves being inspired by all the amazing professionals. He feels everyone comes from a different walk of life, has a different obstacle as well as their own successes. Jackson’s contribution is to connect professionals and business owners who are trying to identify and capture opportunities. He makes new members aware of events, facilitates connections, educates on our LGBTE certification process, and assists with nglccNY M3 Mixer registration and front desk services.

NGLCC celebrates its 15 years of creating opportunities for LGBT business owners and our Corporate Partners, what were you up to 15 years ago or where do you hope to be 15 years from now?

As a consultant for small businesses, please feel free to reach out to Jackson with questions about how banking can support your business needs. He has extensive knowledge of deposit products, convenience services, ancillary products and services (such as merchant and treasury), as well as small business lending, and how it connects to a business' cash cycle. As a banker and an Ambassador of the Chamber, Barton Jackson is more than happy to facilitate any professional connections or referrals to help you support your business development needs.

Some fun and interesting facts:
  • Jackson was part of the Talkin’ Broncos speech and debate program, where he accumulated over 100 competition awards and went on with his team to become the first national champions of Boise State University.
  • Prior to retiring, Jackson’s father went to become The North Face’s CIO and helped take the company public.
  • FiancĂ©, Stanley Martin, performs eight shows a week on Broadway on Disney’s Aladdin.
  • Jackson and Martin are proud parents of two Pomeranians, Odin and Hera.
