Corporate Spotlight: Theresa Harrison from EY

Heidelberg (born), Memphis (raised), Secaucus (employed) – March’s 2017 Corporate Spotlight brings you Theresa Harrison, Global Diversity & Inclusiveness Procurement Lead at EY. EY is a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services, an NGLCC Founding Corporate Partner and nglccNY Silver Level Corporate Partner. Theresa is responsible for the design, development and implementation of diverse supplier policies, processes, and procedures, at EY.

For Theresa, the path that led to D&I, which she refers to as “a great journey impacting lives,” began in 2000 where she answered an ad for Baker Hughes, an oilfield services company out of Houston, TX, to build and run their supplier diversity program which she did for 4 years. Shortly after, Harrison was recruited by Robert Half to fill the Supplier Diversity role at EY, where she will be celebrating 13 years this June.

Surrounding herself with a great team (internally and externally) allows her to execute exceptional client service to all consistencies, says Theresa. “I serve as the lead but the foundation of great people with the common vision and values is crucial to my success," she said. As a recognized leader in the industry, Harrison sits on the NGLCC Procurement Council as Co-Chair of the Mentorship Committee and is also the Chair of WBENC – one of her greatest successes - where she’s helping create opportunities for economic growth for all suppliers and future entrepreneurs.

What drives your personal commitment to Supplier Diversity?

My drive is that every day I get to make a difference in the lives of many to achieve economic growth and impact local and global communities to succeed in creating wealth.

What drives EY’s commitment to Supplier Diversity?

For EY, it is our overall commitment to building a better working world. I can harness all the EY resources and thought leadership to inspire diverse suppliers to think big and be confident in their ability to provide high quality products and services that meet EY needs. Through our initiative EY aims to create a distinctive experience for suppliers by teaming together to develop innovative solutions, strategies and accelerating possibilities as we respond with a diverse mindset to our customers, clients and communities around us.

What prompted EY to get involved with the NGLCC?

Our holistic commitment to diversity and the LGBT community. LGBTBE is one of the pillars of diversity within our supplier diversity platform. The NLGCC is a valuable partner that delivers on value and allows us to build capacity in the LGBTBE supplier community, certifies businesses and provides access to our stakeholders to connect for opportunities.

What categories of LGBTBE owned-businesses are best suited to do business with EY?

We have four main categories within Procurement:
  1. Products & Services (Professional Services, Marketing, Facilities, Talent)
  2. Real Estate
  3. Travel
  4. Technology
Please go to www.ey.com/procurement to learn more about our Procurement Organization.

What is a current challenge that you experience while integrating new diverse suppliers into EY’s current supply chain?

The change in geography moving from domestic to global regions; a supplier must have capabilities as an Americas as a whole and global capability.

What are common mistakes that some diverse suppliers make when approaching EY?

Not understanding the value or solution they can bring to our organization or what it is that we do. Do the research and go to the website, ask questions at events when EY is in attendance. Get to know the business we are in.

What are three things that LGBTBEs can do to showcase their capabilities to EY?

  1. Come to events to showcase to our procurement and build relationships.
  2. EY seeks innovative solutions (think: how can you be our solution).
    • How can you help us better deliver services to our internal and external stakeholders?
  3. Know your business and the business we are in.
EY is Co-Hosting with nglccNY the SDI event next week on March 14. What can our suppliers expect and more importantly, what should they walk away with?

An overview of our commitment to LGBT in the workplace and in supplier diversity. As well as how the digital age is impacting the way companies are doing business - The Disruption.
