On January 12, 2013, the Social Impact Industry Council of NGLCCNY welcomed 18 board members from various LGBT non-profit organizations for its second annual Non-Profit Board Retreat. Graciously hosted by The Standard Hotel, these community leaders explored questions of board engagement and performance as well as organizational impact.
Ben Brooks of Marsh skillfully facilitated the day. Through a variety of creative and highly interactive exercises, participants shared their experiences around board recruitment, accountability, term limits and many other hallmarks of strong board governance. In the afternoon, Doug Wingo of Wingo Inc., presented a fundraising session centered on approaching major individual donors, making the ask and overcoming objections.
Many participants found the Non-Profit Board Retreat a great way to improve their skills, share their experiences and challenges serving on boards, as well as to network with other community leaders. One satisfied participant said: “The ability to network and hear different strategies for doing the same thing is an invaluable opportunity”. Not to mention the fabulous setting overlooking the High Line. Overall, a valuable way to spend a January Saturday!
