On January 2, 2013 a series of automatic federal spending cuts and tax hikes will go into effect if Congress does not reach a bipartisan budget resolution. While this scenario will affect everyone, the impact on LGBT people and small businesses will be particularly sharp.
This week the White House Business Council will hold a call to address specific action steps you can take as business leaders. The NGLCC invites you to this call:
What: White House Business Leader Call
When: Friday, November 30, 2012
Start Time: 12:00pm EST
Dial In: 800-288 8976 Conference ID: 270474
Note: This call is off the record and not for press purposes
If sequestration takes place in January, taxes will immediately rise on middle-class Americans and small businesses. Federal spending with small businesses will be drastically cut. The impact of tax increases means consumers will spend nearly $200 billion less. For LGBT people, sequestration would reduce federal services that protect LGBT people from discrimination in healthcare and housing. It would remove critical resources that are used to prevent bullying and school violence against LGBT youth.
The NGLCC favors an agreement that is balanced and fair, combining increases in revenue with reductions in spending. We urge you to contact Congress today to let them know that inaction is not an option. You can reach your Representative by calling the Congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121.
