NGLCCNY Receives National Recognition

The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce New York became an award-winning organization this morning when it received two Chamber Excellence Awards at the NGLCC National Business and Leadership Conference in Chicago. NGLCC affiliates from across the country submit nominations for their programs and also have the ability to nominate their peers. Winners are vetted and selected by a panel of NGLCC affiliate leaders and staff.

NGLCCNY was recognized for creating innovative effective programming that reaches both diverse and targeted audiences. The Excellence in Programming Award was received for Certified Superstar and the Excellence in Communications Award was garnered for the Chamber’s monthly newsletter Excelsior!

“NGLCCNY is a world class organization and this is an extraordinary acknowledgement of our dedication and the quality of the work we produce here in New York,” said Chamber President Richard Oceguera. “All of our programs are designed to provide value to our Members and Corporate Partners and they are founded on our strong commitment to promoting LGBT inclusiveness in Supplier Diversity.”

The Supplier Diversity Committee, chaired by David Ricciardi, President of Proximo Consulting Services, produces Certified Superstar. In this innovative program, certified LGBT Business Enterprise (LGBTBE) owners present their businesses to a panel of three Corporate Partners à la the hit ABC reality show Shark Tank. The panelists evaluate the presentations and provide immediate feedback to each participant. The frank critiques and enhanced visibility among corporate professionals are extremely valuable to business owners. And the corporations gain value in connecting with potential suppliers outside their usual view as well as the opportunity to make connections with their peers at other companies.

“We delight in connecting our certified suppliers to our Corporate Partners. Our aim is to arm our members with real life business building tools,” said Mr. Ricciardi. “As the committee charged with creating programming targeted to LGBTBEs, winning this important award validates our efforts.” The Supplier Diversity team is comprised of certified LGBTBE owners Rob D’Errico and Sharon Melnick, Ph.D.

In 2012, the Media Communications Committee, headed by Gonzalo Araya of L7z Group, transformed Excelsior! from a simple Outlook-based email into a powerful, integrated communications platform connecting readers to the NGLCCNY News Blog, website and other social media platforms. Excelsior! has an open rate of 31% and click-through rate of 29% (well above industry standards of 26.2% and 4.7%, respectively) and is a key communications source for Chamber members and followers.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized by our colleagues with this prestigious award,” said Gonzalo (Gonzo) Araya, Creative Principal at L7z Group and Media Communications Chair at NGLCCNY. “While Excelsior! is a strategically aligned communications platform, it would be nothing without our readers. Thank you to all who follow our work and those who contribute to the content!”

This award-winning digital publication features inspiring interviews and articles written by Chamber members Damon L. Jacobs and Robert Finklestein. Henry Jones, Chief of Staff, contributes news stories, creates graphics and oversees content selection. Richard Oceguera is Managing Editor. Mr. Araya oversees production and digital dissemination.

NGLCCNY provides a wide range of excellent programs and acknowledges the efforts and amazing contributions of all Chamber committees and the volunteers who tirelessly and graciously work together to build up the Chamber.
